Suitable for Registered Nurses and Nurse Associates who have an NMC registration (or equivalent such as HCPC, GMC etc).
There are 3 sessions on offer. The sessions can be accessed as stand alone or all 3. We recommend that you do them in order of session 1 then 2 then 3.
Wound assessment
- Understand the types of wound healing to support clinical decision making
- Wound bed assessment using a structured framework to inform your treatment plan
- Holistic assessment including managing co-morbidities and medication issues for wound management
- Treatment planning
Wound management
- Wound bed preparation including basic debridement product use (NOT sharp debridement)
- Management of different aetiologies including post-surgical wounds, burns, blisters, skin tears
- Recognition and referral for unusual aetiologies and malignancies (safety netting only)
- Appropriate dressing selection; an in depth explanation of each dressing category, what it does, how it works and when it is not appropriate e.g. foams, hydrocolloids, gelling fibres, alginates etc
Understanding and selection of antimicrobials for wound management
- Recognise the risks for developing wound infection
- Be familiar with the signs and symptoms of wound infection including biofilms and when investigations are required
- Examine the appropriate use of wound dermal bed swabbing (indications and technique) and tissue sampling referral
- Recognise when antimicrobial treatment is indicated and on balance the importance of guardianship
- Be familiar with the topical antimicrobial options and their mode of action
- Recognise the steps required to reduce the risk of wound infection, and sepsis prevention
- Prescribing antimicrobials
