Numerous studies have identified the broad range of physical, mental and cognitive issues that can affect people after a stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). We aim to discuss commonly seen issues following time in critical care including “post intensive care syndrome” (PICS), post-discharge mortality and other critical care specific issues. We also discuss critical care follow-up services and care of patients following discharge to the community following time in critical care.
Objectives:
- Describe the commonly seen physical, psychological and cognitive issues seen following critical illness
- Understand the high mortality rates seen post-discharge with critical illness
- Know what resources are available locally for critical care follow-up and how to refer patients for this
- Discuss issues in your practice with following up patients following time in critical care
