SUMMARY:Medical/GP Assistant (MA) Training Programme
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the launch of a new\, remotely delivered\, Medical/GP Assistant (MA) Training Programme starting in Autumn 2021 for Practices or PCNs across NEL.  \n  \nThe MA training programme is an opportunity to invest in\, support and further develop enthusiastic members of your existing administrative/reception team and also help reduce the administrative burden placed on clinicians\, managers and/or practices in a busy and complex Primary Care landscape. \n  \nPlease share this information with the senior leadership teams (both clinicians and managers) in your practices/PCNs and any staff members in your team who may be suitable or interested. \n  \nThe aim of this training is to help equip your administrators with a range of more flexible skills\,  a broader knowledge base and a greater degree of insight\, confidence and capability to meet the ever-changing demands and complexities of Primary Care so that they can help safely drive non-clinical work away from clinicians and/or support Managers. \n  \nHistorically training offered to administrators and receptionists has at times been piecemeal\, reductive and focused on a narrow range of topic areas\, rarely helping them make sense of or deal with  the complexity\, uncertainty and change in busy day to day situations. \n  \nAdministrators are increasingly being expected to step up and into new roles and responsibilities without adequate attention to developing their core skills\, attributes or knowledge. Additionally some practices/PCNS struggle to retain enthusiastic team members through the lack of opportunities to invest in their development or broaden their role. \n  \nThis programme is delivered by experienced Primary Care clinicians and senior educators and is intended to train administrative colleagues in a way that is more in keeping with the complexity and reality of Primary Care. It also aligns with the wider workforce diversification\, development and resilience agendas in Primary Care. \nNEXT STEPs \n  \n  \n\nPlease Read the attached flyer with further information & share with others in your practice/PCN\n\n\nDoc 1.1 Course Info has details on background\, Attended audience\nDoc 1.2 Shows competencies and programme Schedule\n\n  \n\nAttend the lunchtime Q&A/launch session on Weds 9th June 1-2pm with the lead Course Tutor to get a better idea of what the course involves and ask any questions. This session is open to anyone interested to find out more- including those considering the course\, mentors\, managers and lead clinicians\n\n  \n\nFollowing on from the launch\,we will be writing out to everyone with a formal application process.\n\n  \n \nOnce registered\,  we will follow this with a calendar invite and email with log in details. \n  \nI realise that’s a lot of information to absorb so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact me. If you have any particular queries I’m very happy to initiate a conversation with the course tutors.

Rokhsana was elected Mayor of Newham in May 2018 on a radical manifesto and is now delivering on this policy agenda\, underpinned by community wealth building principles. This includes one of the most ambitious affordable housing programmes in London\, a whole council approach to tackling the climate emergency\, an extensive programme to tackle racism and disproportionality and a new council directorate dedicated to making Newham the best place for children and young people to grow up. Under Rokhsana’s leadership\, Newham has become the first local authority in the country that put health and wellbeing as the key indicator of its economic success and this year is establishing the countries’ first standing citizen’s assembly. \nMarie Gabriel CBE – With almost 20 years of NHS Board experience\, Marie is currently Chair of North East London Integrated Care System (ICS)\, of Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust and of the NHS Race and Health Observatory. Prior to this\, Marie chaired East London NHS Foundation Trust and before that commissioning organisations with budgets up to £3bn. Her first NED role was as Vice Chair of Newham University Hospital Trust. Marie’s national roles include membership of the National People Board and National Equality and Diversity Group and she is also the Co-Chair of the London People Board and a member of the Greater London Authority’s London Health Board. Marie’s background is in local government and the voluntary sector with particular experience in social justice\, regeneration and equity. In 2020 Marie’s contribution to the NHS was recognised through her incorporation in the Health Service Journal’s list of the 80 most influential people in the NHS and the award of her CBE in the 2018 Queen’s Birthday Honours. Marie’s contribution to the London Borough of Newham was recognised in 2010 when she was awarded Honorary Freedom of the Borough.

SUMMARY:Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
DESCRIPTION:Perhaps surprisingly\, thoughts of suicide are not always related to mental ill-health. The reasons can seem challenging and complex. Furthermore\, it is not always obvious when a person is at risk of suicide. Being suicide alert and talking about the reasons for wanting to live and die has been proven to help. We teach World Health Organisation (WHO) approved courses developed by LivingWorks that facilitate and promote this discussion while keeping both the care-giver and the person at risk safe.\nThis is an intensive 2 day course for care-givers and key community members. It teaches suicide alertness and an easy to remember framework of practical skills to safely initiate\, complete and follow-up on a full suicide intervention.\nWhat is ASIST?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn accredited two day\, interactive training that prepares caregivers to provide suicide first aid interventions.\nWho can attend ASIST?\nAnyone 16 or older (despite previous training) can learn and use the ASIST model. No previous mental health or suicide prevention experience is necessary.\nWhat will you learn as an ASIST trained first aid caregiver?\nAfter taking ASIST\, you will be better able to:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBe suicide alert – identify people who have thoughts of suicide\n\n\nUnderstand the reasons behind thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living\n\n\nAssess risk and safety – develop a plan to increase the safety of the person at risk of suicide\n\n\nRecognise invitations for help\n\n\nRecognise potential barriers of seeking help\n\n\nOffer support – recognise other important aspects of suicide prevention including\nlife-promotion and self-care\n\n\nEffectively apply a suicide intervention model\n\n\nLink people with community resources\n\n\nWhat are the workshop features?\n\n\nPresentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers\n\n\nA scientifically proven intervention model\n\n\nPowerful audio-visual learning aids\n\n\nGroup discussions\n\n\nSkills practice and development\n\n\nA balance of challenge and safety\n\n\nParticipant materials include a 20-page workbook\, wallet card\, and stickers. SUMMARY:NEL Suicide Awareness & Response Training for Primary Care’
DESCRIPTION:NEL Training Hubs are pleased to fund a primary care tailored half day Suicide Prevention course. The course is open to all GPs and wider Primary Care clinical teams can register on the course. The course is interactive and due to the sensitive nature of the content\, will only be able to accommodate a maximum of 20 people.\n \nThe Connecting with People approach ensures that everyone in distress and at risk of suicide is taken seriously and patients are supported to co-produce a safety plan. \nAt the end of the training participants will be able to use the clinical resources to enhance their assessment of a patient at risk of suicide using the SAFETool. They will practice triage\, assessment and referral skills using a clinical case to facilitate referral to MH services if needed and will know how to co-produce a safety plan
