SUMMARY:Health Literacy Awareness Online Session
DESCRIPTION:October is Health Literacy Awareness month and like last year NHS libraries across NEL  are teaming up to deliver a programme of sessions. \nNationally\, 61% of adults struggle to understand health information that contains both words and numbers. In some areas of North East London the figure is nearly 80% (see Geodata – Health Literacy). This has huge implications for individuals and for our Integrated Care System. \n\nThese sessions will build participants’ awareness of personal and organisational health literacy\, review local and national statistics related to the health literacy levels of our patient population\, and explore tools that can be used to improve communication of health information. \nThis training is provided through a collaboration between several North East London NHS Knowledge & Library Services: Barking\, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust\, Barts Health NHS Trust\, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust\, and NELFT. \nTo book click\, on one of the dates below. Please share this across your teams. \nOFFER 1: Monthly Lunchtime wellbeing webinars\nNEL Training Hub are pleased to offer monthly staff wellbeing webinars. All primary care staff are invited to these lunch time sessions aiming to equip staff on various tools and techniques to support self care and wellness. \nQi Gong\nGentle mindful movement for physical and mental relaxation. This practice helps to energise the body\, release stress and increase overall feelings of wellbeing.\nThurs 19th Sept\, 1200 – 1300\nThurs 18th Dec\, 1300 – 1400\nBOOK NOW \nGuided Mindfulness\nGuided relaxation to soothe the nervous system. This session has been specifically created for staff to reduce the impact of ‘fight/flight/freeze’ responses that occur in our bodies in times of stress. These ‘stressors’ can be internal (health) and/or external. You will learn techniques to raise your level of body awareness to invite relaxation into your system and build energy reserves.\nWeds 22nd Oct\, 1300 – 1400\nBOOK NOW \nBody Wisdom\nThis session will empower staff with techniques to bring relief\, reduce pain and improve function around physical postures and movement. Course is open to all staff working in health and social care in North East London. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a person-centred counselling style for addressing the common problem of ambivalence about change. The programme will introduce\, evidence-based skills and strategies to 1) explore people’s ambivalence to change health damaging behaviours and 2) facilitate positive lifestyle change \nThe course will provide opportunities to observe and practice the approach in a protected environment. By the end of the course participants will feel able to start using Motivational Interviewing (MI) in their work settings. The course (equivalent to two days) introduces participants to the theory\, spirit and principles in using MI to help people make positive change. The training will use a range of methods including didactic teaching\, live demonstrations through role play with professional actors\, audio\, video and coaching. The training will aim to create a curiosity to learn more and develop practice. This course delivery team will include a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) who has worked and trained across a wide range of settings. \nParticipants must fully attend all parts of the course and ensure you have a working microphone and camera (if being delivered online). Late comers will not be allowed entry. The course is delivered via Zoom platform\, and learners should ensure device and network enables this prior to registering. Joining instruction will be circulated 48 hours prior to the delivery dates. \nWhat previous attendees have feedback: \n‘This training is perfect for my role -in facilitating new assessments and I am thankful for participating in MI training’ \n‘Really enjoyed this course.  Reflection on own practice – a lot of thought provoking areas that I need to change.  e.g. using more open questions compared to closed’ \n‘Mindful communication\, person centred\, empathetic.. all of the MI techniques and the spirit! All of the training was helpful\, particularly as it was very interactive. Breakout rooms were helpful’ \nPlaces are limited please book early to avoid disappointment! The programme teaches the skills needed to identify someone who may be thinking about suicide and to pass the person onto a suicide first aider. Suicide First Aid Lite (Virtual) training offers learning outcomes that are knowledge based and factual. This training can be used as a stand-alone programme or as the first part of a journey to learn suicide prevention skills.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are funded places on this face-to-face course for all workforce across North East London. DESCRIPTION:I am Professor Joanne Harris\, and I am delighted to have joined the University of East London this month as the new Dean of Medicine. In addition to my education role\, I also practice as a GP in London. The University is embarking on an exciting initiative to establish a GMC-accredited MBBS undergraduate School of Medicine at the Stratford campus\, with the first cohort of students set to begin in 2027. As we develop this programme\, we aim to leverage the comprehensive resources of the UEL Health Campus to create enriching learning opportunities for local healthcare providers\, including both medical and Allied Health professionals. \nBuilding on the success of the workshop series as part of the Postgraduate Academy of Health education programme\, previously developed and delivered to our Health Fellows\, we are expanding these offerings to a broader audience. As part of this initiative\, we will be hosting a series of lunchtime webinars covering a range of topics relevant to local healthcare providers. \nThe webinars will be conducted online and will run from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM on Tuesdays\, Wednesdays or Thursdays. The event will present on the co-produced solutions which developed collaboratively with different communities across England.
