GP placement structure – Years 1 & 2
- Year 1 – will largely consist of active sitting in with professionals and observing consultations. In the current climate this may involve: virtual consultations between patient, student and GP; attendance at clinical meetings either virtually or face to face; observing the work of other members of the practice e.g. reception, HCAs, admin team.
- Year 2 – students should progress further, consulting appropriately selected patients and making management plans under the supervision of their GP. Student’s surgeries form an integral part of their learning and they should ideally occur on most of the Wednesdays that they are in practice.
What’s involved: Role of the PA Supervisor and host GP Practice
As a reminder, PA students require clinical supervision from a GP. Clinical supervision includes involving students in your daily clinics, encouraging them to take histories and examine patients and present their findings to you By their second year PA students can usually undertake significant and valuable clinical tasks independently with ongoing GP oversight.
Next steps
If you would like to submit an expression to teach PA students, please confirm which block and how many students the practice would be interested in by contacting Chloe Rayner c.rayner@qmul.ac.uk.
If you have flexibility for any of the teaching blocks, please do let us know.
They will require a short application form to be completed, and would then conduct a practice visit. This is an opportunity for us to meet with the practice and discuss teaching options, training, quality and to answer any questions you may have about teaching
If you have any queries about PA GP teaching, please contact Chloe Raynerc.rayner@qmul.ac.uk.
